ZOTERO installation and user guide for NEMO-Online style sheet (bibliographic referencing) (CSL).

  1. Firefox must be installed on your computer : it is downloadable from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/fx/, or  at http://www.mozilla.com/products/download.html?product=firefox-5.0.1&os=win&lang=en-US (UK-US versions, and more recent at www.mozilla.org
  2. ZOTERA can be downloaded from  (http://www.zotero.org/ – latest version:  http://www.zotero.org/support/2.1_changelog) ;  standalone alpha version from (http://www.zotero.org/support/standalone) acceptable for NEMO. If you have both versions, you can use them alternatively or separately.
  3. Install ZOTERO (for use with Firefox) or zotero standalone (for use as a standalone program): Tutorial from http://www.zotero.org/support/start.
  4. Using ZOTERO with the NEMO-Online CSL (based on the “Chicago author_date” style), download the NEMO-Online CSL and follow the instructions on zotero’s website or in the online help of ZOTERO (standalone version).

Tips you should know before collecting references with ZOTERO:

  • Your ZOTERO library is stored in a SQlite database called “zotero.sqlite”. You can rename it but zotero will only read  “zotero.sqlite”.
  • The database and other files and folders  used by your library are stored (for Windows Vista and later versions) in C:\Users\<User Name>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<randomstring>\zotero (Windows) : you may change this file, but first you must make copy the folders and documents  included  to the new folder  (if you fail to do so,  zotero will not find the files, and will exit automatically – in this case, copy the contents of your folder to the new location, and  start again). More information at http://www.zotero.org/support/zotero_data.

Importing references from internet libraries

Zotero allows for automatic import of a reference from an internet library, or given its ISBN or DOI. For JSTOR, when reviewing a JSTOR documents in the browser, use the “Export citation” command of JSTOR then > “Text File (BIBTEX)”; copy the active contents (for example:

@article{1995,
     jstor_articletype = {book-review},
     title = {Review: [untitled]},
     author = {Stokes, Martin},
     journal = {Bulletin of the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London},
     jstor_issuetitle = {},
     volume = {58},
     number = {1},
     jstor_formatteddate = {1995},
     pages = {pp. 154-155},
     url = {http://www.jstor.org/stable/620033},
     ISSN = {0041977X},
     abstract = {},
     language = {English},
     year = {1995},
     publisher = {Cambridge University Press on behalf of School of Oriental and African Studies},
     copyright = {Copyright © 1995 School of Oriental and African Studies},
    }

)
into the clipboard, and import the content of the clipboard into the zotero library using the command “Import from Clipboard” in the latter.
You can also save the active content in a file and import it into the zotero library using the “Import…” command of zotero.

Another possibility is to import multiple files (when you see a “folder” icon on the right of the URL address in Firefox – just click on it and choose the articles you wish to import) at once.

Do not forget to remove the extra “pp.” in the field “Pages” of your zotero library when exporting the bibliography for NEMO.

Importing book references from Google search

When reviewing a Google book in the browser, search for “Bibliographic information” > Export citation. Choose for example (tested) “BIBTEX” and either save it to a file (for ex. “biblio.txt”) or read it directly with a simple word processor such as note pad or wordpad under Windows). If you chose to save the file, you must import the data from the file with the “Import…” command of zotero into your library. You can also select and copy the information to the clipboard and import it directly from the clipboard with the “Import from Clipboard” command. Your Book reference appears in a new collection with the title of the book.

You can also import directly the reference into your zotero database by clicking the “book” icon on the right of your (left-to-right) Firefox browser.
