Instrumental facture from its sources in the Ancient Near East to modern times

In the years 1920 a small dulcimer with a keyboard appeared in Karachi, brought by Japanese sailors. This musical toy became an essential Baluchi instrument after improvements and development of a virtuoso technique. The paper describes the instrument, its technical aspects, its limitations and advantages, as well as the position it has in Baluchi traditional and modern music. It is based on field research, and in the absence of documentation on the testimony of a top musician who, on his father’s footsteps greatly contributed to the improvement of the instrument.

The Tunisian cultural and artistic heritage is part of an important contribution potential to civilization and world culture. Tunisia has preserved essential elements of its traditional patrimony and spearheaded a revival in creation in original forms to start with and then modernizing it. The classical mālūf, (dialectal pronunciation of maʾlūf which means ‘something familiar)’ is an essential feature of Tunisia with deep roots in its history and offers an endless source of inspiration. The author exposes the wealth of Tunisian classical music while discussing its authenticity.

Note that call for papers deadline for NEMO 4 (view it here) is extented to February 2016. Selected papers will appear in issue 5.

  • Autres axes
