We are very pleased to announce that Ralf Martin Jäger, Professor in ethnomusicology and History of European music in the Institut für Musikwissenschaft und Musikpaedagogik of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität – Münster, has joined the Academic Board of NEMO-Online.

Ralf Jäger is a renowned musicologist with numerous publications in the fields of Turkish music and music of Eastern-Asia.

His competence is a welcome complement to the Academic Board of NEMO-Online, and an extension towards German musicology.

We warmly welcome him among us.

NEMO-Online No. 4 : Call for papers

Research groups CERMAA, ICONEA and IReMus are seeking papers for the third issue of NEMO. The theme will be about ‘Instrumental facture from its sources in the Ancient Near East to modern times.’

All aspects of Organology will be considered such as:

Prehistory:

  • Instrument making in pre-history as an unconscious cognitive phenomenon
  • Distinction between implement and instrument
  • Sensorial analogy in the conceptualisation of musical instruments

History:

  • Instruments and totemism
  • Instruments and worship
  • Instruments as urban and commercial tools
  • Earliest evidence of musical facture
  • Organological evidence: material, glues and their making, hides, strings, woods, metals, etc.
  • Recorded instrument makers, source of materials, etc.

From Christianity, Islam to modern:

  • Evolution
  • Prohibitions
  • Influences

Is there a relationship between instruments and gender?

Papers to be sent both to Richard Dumbrill (rdumbrill[[[]]]nemo-online.org) and Amine Beyhom (abeyhom[[[]]]nemo-online.org) and should follow the editorial layout.

The Editing Board will consider the publication of papers which might be ‘off subject’ as long as they retain some relationship with the wider theme of the publication.

Deadlines: proposals by end of May 2015 and finalized paper by end of August 2015.

NEMO-Online No. 3 : Call for papers

Research groups  CERMAA, ICONEA and PLM are seeking papers for the third issue of NEMO. The theme will be about ‘Myths and truths in Music from the Antiquity to the Present.’ (Mesopotamia, Asia, Egypt, Africa, Greece, Rome, Byzantium, the Occident and beyond.)

Myths and legends always have had their purpose in the building-up of history and of its truisms such as with magical powers of the lyre and others. The Orient is particularly rich with such events even reaching the domain of theory, and often leading to astonishing blunders.

Principal themes:

  • Myths and musical instruments
  • Deities in music
  • Truth within myth
  • Obnubilation and historical lucidity
  • Methodological Epistemology of the myth in textual expression
  • Others

Les centres et groupes de recherches CERMAA, ICONEA et PLM ont le plaisir d’annoncer le thème de NEMO-Online N°3 : « Légendes et vérités dans les musiques du Proche-Orient ».

Période: des temps anciens jusqu’au xxe siècle – Mésopotamie, Asie, Proche- et Moyen-Orient, Égypte, Afrique du Nord (et Afrique tout court), Grèce, Rome, Byzance, l’Occident et au-delà.

Les légendes ont depuis toujours eu leur rôle à jouer dans la sculpture de l’histoire et des « vérités » d’aujourd’hui. La musique en a eu sa part (telles la « musique des sphères » et les pouvoirs magiques de la lyre et autres) et l’histoire du Proche-Orient est particulièrement riche d’exemples de telles interventions du mythique dans la réalité de la musique, ou dans sa théorie. 

C’est cette histoire des mythes et affabulations sur la musique que nous proposons de dérouler dans ce numéro, les articles pouvant se concentrer autour d’une idée, d’un exemple ou d’une région quelconque pour traiter le thème.
